Many of the designs I've seen use a circuit that will keep ticking for a bit after the bottom dropper is emptied to get all the items out of the droppers, but that clock would stop soon after it's emptied so items would get stuck in the line. Water flowing on packed ice blocks and blue ice block makes the items go faster. Also, adding a 1×2 piston on the top to push you onto a platform once you have reached the top to prevent the player from falling back down can be beneficial. It is possible to create this without soul sand, however it will be much slower. This will turn all of the blocks into source blocks so you don't have to place water on each block. Place signs and water sources alternating until you reach the top.
