These negatives played a decisive role in the Nuremberg Trials. He went on to appear in the historical drama Palmeras en la Nieve Palm Trees in the Snow — which you can also stream on Netflix now — the thriller Toro, dark comedy The Bar, and most recently, The Skin of the Wolf also on Netflix. The cinematography is exceptional; performances are remarkable. Because mass extermination of Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, homosexuals and others can be easily proven. The director of photography Aitor Mantxola and I were very clear: we wanted a realistic image, true and with great quality. The story focuses on Francesc Boix, hauntingly played by Mario Casas The 33, The Invisible Guest , a prisoner with a flair for photography who documents not only the realities of camp life but does so in a way that evokes a wider truth about the human condition. For many years, I have immersed myself in endless films and documentaries.

The Photographer of Mauthausen is a tense, well put together drama that serves as a timely reminder of the importance of capturing and preserving truth. More attention should probably have been paid the photographs, stark images of murder, victims lying on snow, dangling from fences, etc. The difficulty was the synthesis of some of the characters— Boix in particular— and throwing out a lot of the material, in accordance with the rules that cinema imposes. Both rewarding and heartbreaking, this movie is recommended, but only for mature audiences. Of particular note are the actual photographs smuggled out of Mauthausen, which are shown at the end of the film.

Saving that film becomes a mission. When the forces of good triumph even in a small way -- and Boix's success, though significant, cannot begin to compensate for the atrocities in the camp -- audiences feel rewarded for the attention they have paid. This really effective sequence gives a great sense of both the stakes involved and the lengths the prisoners will go to in order to protect the legacy of Mauthausen. Listening in to the camp radio his fellow inmates have conjured up, he hears the tide of the war turning in the East. The photography is the heart of the film.

A lot of luck and chance were involved in deciding who lived and who died. Art director Rosa Ros who is very detail-oriented, very rigorous worked closely with Mantxola and has done an excellent job. I have focused on one very specific, unexplored topic— the Spanish. It was clear to Francesc and his intimates that those other photographs -- of bodies piled high, of naked men in abject fear, of a fellow prisoner hanged -- were destined to be burned as the threat of an Allied victory drew closer. It is easy to forget that there was ever a time where moments of significance and historical importance could be not only discarded but deliberately destroyed altogether. Boix was a friendly guy, a survivor, mischievous and smart with a bit of arrogance and self-assuredness. Most of all, seeing how naturally the Nazis themselves assumed their role.

While Mario, 32, might not be as well known as his Spanish acting counterparts, he is well on his way to becoming an international movie star. The scenes of the singing and dancing are juxtaposed with an act of cold, calculated barbarism from one of the guards. It's very powerful -- as is the impact of the whole movie. And I think the take we used was the first take. Male nudity is shown in many scenes; men try to cover their private parts, sometimes unsuccessfully.

Boix arrived at Mauthausen, barely 20 years old, after the fall of the Spanish Republic, exile, and the German invasion of France, where he was captured following the defeat of the French army. But this is a masterful production with a singular identity. We live in the age of the selfie, a time where all of us carry cameras with us at all times and every conceivable moment is documented, shared and scrutinised. As the story progresses we see the ingenuity that is required to pull off the task of protecting the camera film and the level of risk the prisoners are willing to tolerate to make it work. In fact, the examples that appear during the credits complement the story. How did such avoidance of color in the camp and its surrounding areas contribute to the mood and harshness of the movie? Women are forced into prostitution. Characters are savagely killed: point-blank shootings, incinerated, gassed, shot while trying to escape, hung, brutally beaten.
