Though this is oil on canvas, Biscoff first became famous as a painter of roses on porcelain. McDaniel, an art instructor at the high school, who curated the permanent collection from 1973 to 1991. The California Impressionism pieces from the unusual Gardena High School Collection will be on display at the Autry until October 2016. The artist, John Hubbard Rich, was a part of a group of artists in Los Angeles that was developing a broader approach to style and subject matter by incorporating portraiture, still life, and genre painting. Students worked with artists, galleries and alumni to coordinate studio visits, raise purchase funds and present an annual exhibition. An earlier version of this article stated the incorrect recipient and this version has been updated with the correct recipient. An important component of the Purchase Prize Exhibit was the annual dinner. The first had been presented by the Class of Summer 1925, the second by the Class of Winter 1926.

This show started at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Also included is information about each painting in the exhibit. The exhibitions featured no avant-garde modernist works or outright political expressions, and none of the artists would be associated with leftist causes. The annual Purchase Prize Exhibit eventually became an important community affair. The Autry is located in Griffith Park by the Los Angeles Zoo. The board started by asking me to write the book.
